Tortuguero National Park day trip: canals and wildlife
Crocodiles, monkeys and macaws from a boat moving through flooded forest
A full-day tour from San Jose to Tortuguero National Park combines a drive through Braulio Carrillo's cloud forest with a boat trip through jungle canals and lagoons where you watch wildlife in its habitat—crocodiles, sloths, monkeys, toucans, iguanas and birds. Breakfast and a typical Caribbean lunch are included, as are park fees and an English or Spanish-speaking guide. You'll need to provide your full name, nationality and passport number before departure so the operator can register you with the park's ticketing system.

The Experience
The day starts before dawn from San Jose. The drive climbs into Braulio Carrillo National Park, where steep slopes rise under thick cloud forest and waterfalls drop visible from the road. Once you reach the coast, you leave the bus and board a boat—the part of the tour where the wildlife watching actually happens. The canals and lagoons of Tortuguero are narrow enough that you move through the water at a pace where crocodiles, sloths, monkeys, toucans, egrets, herons and blue morpho butterflies stay visible. The park covers 29,000 hectares and is home to endangered mammals like manatees and agoutis alongside abundant birds and reptiles.
At noon you eat a hearty typical buffet lunch, then walk through Tortuguero Village to learn about the town's history and the people who live there. The boat ride itself is where most travelers spend their time watching and photographing—the canals are the park's main feature, and the guide will point out species as you move through. Note that turtle nesting happens only at night and is not part of this day tour; the 21 miles of beach where green sea turtles nest (July to October) is the largest nesting site in the western hemisphere, but daytime visitors see the habitat, not the nesting itself.
The return drive to San Jose includes a rest stop and arrives around 6:30 p.m. The full day is 12.5 hours door to door. You'll travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide who speaks English or Spanish, and the operator handles park registration as long as you provide your passport details before the tour date—this is required by the park and tickets are limited each day.

What wildlife will I actually see on the boat through Tortuguero?
Crocodiles, sloths, monkeys, toucans, egrets, herons, iguanas, aninghas and blue morpho butterflies are common sightings in the canals and lagoons. Manatees and agoutis also live in the park, though spotting them depends on timing and luck. The boat moves slowly enough through the water that animals stay visible for photographs.
Is this tour the same as the nighttime turtle nesting tour?
No. Tortuguero is famous as a nesting site for green sea turtles (July to October), but turtle nesting tours run only at night and are a separate experience. This day trip shows you the park's forests, canals and wildlife habitat, but not the turtles nesting on the beach.
What do I need to bring or provide before booking?
You must provide your full name, nationality and passport number to the operator before the tour date. The park requires this information to register you in its ticketing system, and tickets are limited each day—missing this step risks losing your spot. Bring sunscreen, a hat, binoculars if you have them, and a camera.
How much of the day is spent on the boat versus driving?
The drive from San Jose to the coast takes several hours and passes through two national parks. Once you reach Tortuguero, you spend the middle of the day on the boat moving through the canals and lagoons, then walk the village before returning to San Jose. The full tour is 12.5 hours from pickup to drop-off.
Is the boat ride suitable for young children or people with mobility concerns?
Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available. The vehicle and all areas are wheelchair accessible. The boat itself is the main activity, so mobility on and off the boat should be considered—ask the operator about specific boat access when you book.
