The Experience

The morning air in San Jose felt cool as our driver pulled up in a sturdy 4WD. We tossed our bags in the back and set off, windows cracked just enough to catch that earthy scent after last night’s rain. Bajos del Toro isn’t on most tourist maps. It’s tucked behind Poás Volcano, and you can feel the difference—less polished, more real. After about 45 minutes, we rolled into the village. Mist hung low over the fields. Chickens darted across the road near a tiny soda (that’s what locals call cafés here). We started our hike right by the river; boots squished into soft mud and you could hear water rushing somewhere close by. The trail was quiet except for birds and the occasional splash from hidden streams.

The first waterfall took us about an hour to reach—no crowds, just us and this wild curtain of water pouring into a blue pool. We found three more falls along the way, each one different: one narrow and loud, another wide with rocks perfect for sitting. There’s even a spot called “the Crying Cave”—you’ll know it by the echo of dripping water inside. If you’re up for it, there are places to swim (the water’s cold but worth it). By noon we were hungry; Luis suggested lunch at Silencio Lodge nearby—he called ahead so we didn’t have to wait.

The best part? Nothing’s fixed on this tour. We stopped whenever something caught our eye—a roadside fruit stand selling guanabana juice, or a view too good not to photograph. If you want coffee or need a break, just ask. It really does feel like your own adventure.
