The experience
The day starts at Doka Estate, a working coffee plantation on the slopes of Poás Volcano. You'll walk through the farm and learn the full cycle: seed germination, plant development, harvesting and processing. The itinerary includes a typical Costa Rican breakfast on the grounds so you can taste what you've just seen made. The plantation sits in the foothills, so the route itself shows you the microclimates and agriculture of the region: cattle farms, different crop zones, and views down to the Central Valley.
Poás Volcano comes next. The crater sits at 2,574 meters and you can walk to its rim. The stay is roughly 50 minutes total, split between a brief orientation, a 10-minute walk to the viewpoint, 20 minutes at the crater's edge, and the return to the vehicle. The crater lagoon and gas emanations are the draw here, along with the montane forest ecosystem. Weather and volcanic activity can affect visibility, but when conditions allow, the scale of the crater is the centerpiece of the morning.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens closes the day. The park holds five named waterfalls and the largest animal sanctuary in Costa Rica. Trails wind through lush jungle where you're likely to see monkeys, hummingbirds, toucans, frogs and other wildlife. Lunch is included and served at the park. The whole tour runs 10 hours from pickup to return.
