The experience
The day starts at a 100% organic coffee plantation where you eat a typical breakfast overlooking the fields, then walk through harvesting, fermentation, roasting and export to understand how the bean moves from plant to cup. A tasting of coffee, chocolate and liquor follows. The Doka plantation tour is one of the most complete in the country. From there, the vehicle climbs to Poás Volcano at 2,575 meters, where the crater itself is the second largest in the world and currently active. Sulfuric fumaroles rise from the rim and a turquoise lagoon sits at the bottom, both visible from the main viewpoint.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens is where the tour spends its longest stretch. The park's trail system winds through tropical forest past five of Costa Rica's largest waterfalls and a viewpoint positioned behind one of the water curtains. Along the way you move through a hummingbird garden holding 26 species, a jaguar and puma enclosure, monkey habitats, and exhibits of amphibians and snakes: all rescued animals, more than 110 species total. Lunch is a buffet with over 35 dishes, eaten at the park's restaurant.
The route covers significant elevation change and distance, so the pace is steady but not rushed. An air-conditioned vehicle handles all transport between sites, and the guide narrates in English or Spanish throughout. Bottled water is provided for the day.
