If you're craving a real adventure outside Medellín—think rappelling down a roaring waterfall and swimming in Antioquia’s largest natural pool—this day trip to San Luis is for you. It’s off-the-beaten-path, full of local flavor, and perfect if you want something different from the usual tourist spots.
The drive out of Medellín started early—mist still hanging over the hills as we wound our way toward San Luis. Our guide, Andrés, chatted about local life and pointed out tiny roadside stalls selling arepas and tinto. By the time we reached the edge of town, the air felt cooler and thick with that earthy smell you only get after a night of rain in Antioquia.
We hiked through dense jungle trails, boots squelching in the mud. Birdsong echoed overhead—honestly, I lost count of how many times I slipped on those mossy rocks. When we reached La Cuba waterfall, it was louder than I expected. The 30-meter drop looked huge up close. Strapping into the harness felt a bit nerve-wracking, but Andrés double-checked everything and talked us through each step. The spray hit my face as I started down—cold and sharp—and by the time my feet touched the pool below, my heart was racing.
Afterwards, we trekked to La Planta—the biggest natural pool I've ever seen in Colombia. Locals were already there, some swimming, others just lounging on smooth rocks with snacks from home. The water was chilly at first dip but so clear you could see every pebble underfoot. We spent ages just floating around and watching kingfishers dart by. If you’ve done Rio Claro before but want something quieter (and honestly more wild), this spot feels like a secret.
The guides are patient and explain everything step by step, but you should be comfortable hiking on uneven ground and trying new activities like rappelling.
Bring sturdy shoes (they’ll get muddy), swimwear, sunscreen, a towel, snacks if you like, and maybe a change of clothes for after swimming.
It’s a full-day adventure—plan on leaving Medellín early morning and getting back around sunset.
No lunch is provided, but there are small shops along the way where you can buy snacks or bring your own food to enjoy by the pool.
Your day includes private transportation from Medellín to San Luis, all canyoning equipment (helmet, harness, life vest), professional bilingual guide support throughout the hike and rappelling experience, health insurance coverage during activities, plus plenty of time to swim in natural pools surrounded by jungle scenery.
