The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup from whichever town suits your base (Salento, Filandia, Armenia, Manizales or Pereira), and a drive to Cocora Valley's entrance. The wax palms here are Colombia's national tree and grow taller than anywhere else on earth. You'll hike through the valley to the best viewpoints, where mist and wind move across the landscape constantly. Bring a charged phone for photos and wear layers, since the weather shifts fast and the elevation means it stays cool even when the sun breaks through.

After the valley, the guide takes you to Salento, a small colonial town with narrow streets lined in bright Paisa architecture: the style defines the coffee region. You walk through on your own, browsing handicraft shops and getting a feel for how the town moves. Filandia comes next, the second main coffee town, where you'll stroll vibrant streets full of traditional products and catch mountain views from different angles before heading back to your hotel.
