The experience

Puerto Nariño sits at the edge of the Amazon where three countries meet, and this tour uses that geography as its spine. Day one anchors you in the town itself: a city tour of the museum and chocolate house, then a jungle hike into a reserve where alligators, turtles and fish move through the water. That night you return for a night hike to find insects, frogs, spiders and snakes in the dark. Day two takes you by boat across Lake Tarapoto, roughly 30 minutes out, where you'll walk the jungle, learn survival skills and visit an indigenous community on the shore. That evening another night safari hunts for alligators and nocturnal animals. The third day crosses the Amazon River into Peru to reach a Peruvian indigenous settlement, where the guide walks you through daily life, customs and traditional medicine, then moves to a communal house called La Maloka for a workshop in crafts, traditional games and myths. Day four focuses on monkeys and macaws: a boat into the flooded forest to spot them, then a climb up the Naipata viewpoint, a 25-meter tower that opens onto the panorama of Puerto Nariño.

You sleep in two different lodges: Hotel Manguare in town (nights one and three), described as quiet and close to shops, and El Capinuri, a traditional rustic house on Lake Tarapoto's shore (night two). Breakfast, lunch and dinner come with the tour, along with jungle walking boots and hydration. Public transportation between sites is included, as is comprehensive medical insurance and pickup from your hotel or the airport. Bring a poncho or waterproof bag for documents and devices, a flashlight for night walks, mosquito repellent and sunscreen. Cash is essential: Puerto Nariño has only a Bancolombia correspondent, and internet is unreliable for transfers.

The guide is a local who speaks English and Spanish, and the pace assumes moderate fitness: you'll hike, climb, boat and walk at night. Children from age four are welcome. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with poor cardiovascular health.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (7 to 12 years); Infant (4 to 6 years). Under 4: they can't be included in the booking.

What animals will I see on the night hikes in Puerto Nariño and Lake Tarapoto?

Night hikes target insects, frogs, spiders, scorpions and snakes around Puerto Nariño, and alligators plus other nocturnal animals around Lake Tarapoto. The guide leads you with a flashlight to spot them in the dark.

What is the Peruvian indigenous community visit like on day three?

You cross the Amazon River to reach a Peruvian settlement where the guide explains daily life, customs and traditional medicine. In the afternoon you visit La Maloka, a communal house, for a workshop in traditional crafts, games, myths and legends: a cultural exchange rather than a performance.

How much time do I spend on the water versus hiking?

Day two includes a 30-minute boat ride to Lake Tarapoto plus jungle walking; day three crosses the river by boat; day four boats into the flooded forest. The other days mix city walking, jungle hikes and night walks on foot.

What should I pack for the jungle hikes and night walks?

Bring a poncho or waterproof bag to protect documents and devices, a flashlight for night walks, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, swimsuit, sunglasses and a camera. Wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and comfortable pants. Jungle boots are provided.

Is medical care available if something goes wrong during the tour?

Comprehensive medical insurance is included in the tour price. Puerto Nariño is small and remote, so serious emergencies would require evacuation to a larger city.
