Taste coffee at the source and dress like a Colombian muleteer

A 5- to 6-hour coffee tour from Medellín takes you to San Sebastián de Palmitas, a rural corregimiento 45 minutes northwest of the city, where you visit a working coffee farm, taste the beans at origin, and learn the processes that make Colombian coffee distinctive. Hotel pickup and drop-off, a professional guide in English or Spanish, lunch at a local restaurant, snacks, coffee tastings, a traditional poncho and hat, and travel insurance are all included.

5h–6h

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Colombian coffee culture

  • Travel from Medellín to Palmitas
  • Learn coffee making processes
  • Enjoy guided coffee tastings
  • Dress as local muleteer
  • Optional horseback ride

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Medellín hotel and a drive into the mountains toward San Sebastián de Palmitas. The route climbs into the rural landscape that surrounds the city—the corregimiento sits in the northwest, bordered by the municipalities of San Jerónimo, Bello and others, and the terrain shifts from urban to agricultural as you go. Your guide, who speaks English or Spanish, walks you through the coffee process as it actually happens: how the beans are grown, harvested and prepared for export. This is not a museum or a simulation; you're standing in a working finca where the coffee you taste was grown.

At the farm, you participate in a guided coffee tasting led by someone who knows the crop. You'll also dress in a traditional Colombian poncho and hat—the gear a muleteer (arriero) wears in these mountains—and receive a Diploma de Arriero as a keepsake. An optional horseback ride through the scenery is available if you want it. Snacks and coffee or tea are served throughout the morning.

Lunch happens at Fiambre, a local restaurant, and the tour wraps by early afternoon with the drive back to your hotel. The whole experience runs 5 to 6 hours, and the operator runs daily departures with no minimum group size, so you're not waiting for others to fill a slot. Travel insurance is included, though you'll need to bring your identity document. Wear comfortable shoes and long pants—the terrain can be slippery, and shorts and flip-flops are not recommended. The tour operates in all weather.
