The experience
Sabaneta sits 30 minutes outside Medellín, and that's where the farm is. A family operation that has grown coffee for two generations. Your guide picks you up at your hotel and drives you there. Once you arrive, the coffee farmer takes over and walks you through every stage: how the seed becomes a plant, when and how to harvest, what happens after picking. This isn't a demonstration you watch from the side. You'll pick coffee next to them, learning the work that goes into what ends up in your cup.
The farm sits in landscape that matters. You'll see Colombian fruit trees and the hills around the valley. After the fieldwork, you move to tasting. The farmer prepares organic coffee in different methods so you can taste how the process changes the flavor. A gourmet cup is included, and you get to sit with the aroma and taste of what you just learned to make.
The guide brings you back to your hotel when it's done. The whole outing takes 4 to 5 hours. You'll need moderate fitness for walking the fields, and the operator runs the tour in all weather, so dress for whatever the day brings. Health insurance is included in the price.
