experience

What’s the experience like?

It started with the city waking up—Medellin’s air felt cool, almost sweet, as we drove up to Pueblito Paisa. From the top, the city stretches out in every direction, a patchwork of red roofs and green hills. Our guide, Mateo, pointed out the old tram lines and the spot where locals gather for empanadas at dusk. You can hear birds over the hum of traffic, which is oddly soothing up here.

Heading south, the road to Jardin winds through valleys dotted with banana trees and tiny roadside stands selling arepas. Jardin itself feels like a step back—bright houses, wooden balconies, and the smell of roasting coffee everywhere. We met Don Luis, who’s been picking beans since he was a kid. He let us try sorting beans by hand—harder than it looks! The tour isn’t rushed; you get time to sip fresh brew on the plaza, watch old men play dominos, and just take it all in. Lunch was simple but perfect: trout from a nearby stream, rice, and plantains. I still remember the taste of panela in my coffee, just a hint of caramel.

There’s something about walking those cobbled streets with someone who knows every corner—Mateo shared stories about the town’s history, even pointed out a mural painted by his cousin. By late afternoon, the light gets golden and Jardin glows. If you’re into photography, this is your moment. We wrapped up with one last coffee before heading back, tired but happy.
