Four days of hiking through Zhangjiajie's peaks, from the Ten-Mile Gallery to the Glass Sky Walk

A 4-day guided hiking tour of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain in southern China, with an English-speaking guide, 5-star hotel accommodation, and all park tickets and transfers included. The itinerary covers Ten-Mile Gallery and Tianzi Mountain on day two, Bailong Elevator and Yuanjiajie Area on day three, and Tianmen Mountain on day four, with hiking distances ranging from 2 to 6 hours per day. Airport or train station pickup is included, and the tour is suitable for children from age one, though it requires a high level of physical fitness.

The Experience

Day one is arrival and settling in. Your guide meets you at the airport or train station with a sign bearing your name, then drives you to a 5-star hotel in downtown Zhangjiajie. The rest of the day is yours to explore the city at your own pace.

Day two takes you into the National Park for the Ten-Mile Gallery hike, climbing 6,000 steps up to Tianzi Mountain. As you ascend, you see the peaks from bottom, middle, and top—each vantage point opens a different angle on the landscape. At the summit, a McDonald's sits on the ridge if you want to rest and eat. From there you walk to Generals Platform for a panoramic view of Tianzi Mountain, then to Shentang Bay Platform where the peaks crowd close. The Tianzi cable car brings you down the mountain and back to your hotel. Evening options include the Fairy Fox Outdoor Music & Dancing Show or the Zhangjiajie Charming Western Hunan Grand Show, both 1.5 hours long.

Day three combines two areas. You take the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie, then bus to Yangjiajie Area for a 2-hour hike where you climb using hands and feet, squeeze through narrow gaps between huge rocks, and reach Wulong Village—a small house once lived in by bandits. Tianbo Mansion, a big platform there, is the best vantage for the peak wall. In the afternoon you visit Yuanjiajie Area to see the No. 1 Natural Bridge in the World and the Floating Mountains from the movie Avatar, then descend 1.5 hours to Golden Whip Brook, famous for its pristine water, verdant mountains, steep cliffs and serene valley. An optional evening activity is A Fox Fairy of Tianmen Mountain, a real-scene musical drama performed against the high mountains and deep valleys.

Day four is Tianmen Mountain and departure. After breakfast your guide and driver pick you up and take you to Tianmen Mountain, standing 1,500 meters above sea level. You ride the longest cableway in Asia—7,200 meters—and photograph the Avenue toward Heaven with its 99 turns from inside the cable car. On top, you walk the Cliff-Hanging Walkway and cross the Glass Sky Walk, then visit Tianmen Cave, a natural mountain-penetrating Karst cave. After the tour, your guide and driver escort you to the airport or railway station for your onward journey.
