The experience

The day starts at the Bailong Elevator, a glass structure that holds three world records: highest outdoor mountain elevator, fastest sightseeing elevator, and capacity for 64 people at once. In 88 seconds you rise 326 meters while recording the 48 peaks below, arranged like generals in a line. At the top, you reach Yuanjiajie Avatar Mountain and walk the big Misa platform for about an hour, passing the Sky Pillar (the 350-meter floating mountain that inspired the Avatar film), and the Heaven Bridge, the highest natural bridge in the world. The Enchanting Platform offers a close view of peaks in different distances and shapes. The operator notes 30 seconds here and you'll forget to leave.

From there, a sightseeing bus takes you to Lao Wu Chang, a local village where Tujia minority people live and farm rice fields on the mountainside. This is the hidden spot: very few tourists come here. You walk between platforms facing the Sky Elevator with the 48 Generals peaks between you and it, arranged like a garden in the air. The village sits so close you can talk to the peaks. It's a quiet, beautiful place where you see how people live in this fairyland.

Tianzi Mountain, also called the kingdom of peaks, has more than 1000 peaks and many viewing platforms. The peaks are peculiar and beautiful, with trees arranged like enlarged bonsai: the style of classical Chinese painting. The Imperial Writing Brush, the official picture of Zhangjiajie park and the first image on its stamps, is here. You can also visit the bronze statue and cemetery of Helong, one of the ten marshals of the PLA, whose hometown sits at the foot of this mountain. The cable car down from Tianzi Mountain offers views the whole way.
