The experience
The day starts at Tianmen Mountain, where a 7.5-kilometer cable car carries you up the highest peak in Zhangjiajie. From the top, steep cliffs and a bird's-eye view of surrounding mountains and the city spread out below. The mountain is known for the Tianmen Cave (a gate-like opening carved into the cliff by ancient collapse), and a glass walking way that runs along the edge. A bonsai garden sits in the air above the slopes.
Tianzi Mountain comes next, called the kingdom of peaks for its more than 1,000 summits. The cable car ascends through views of peculiar peaks and peaceful canyons, the landscape that appears on Zhangjiajie's official stamps and inspired painters and photographers for centuries. Multiple viewing platforms let you see the peaks from different angles. Helong Park sits on the mountain, built to honor one of the ten marshals of the People's Liberation Army, with his bronze statue and cemetery.
Yuanjiajie, the Avatar mountain, is where you walk a circuit around the big mesa platform for about an hour. The Sky Pillar (the floating mountain that appears in the film Avatar) rises 350 meters above the ground, pointed at the top and narrower below. The Enchanting Platform follows, where the view of green mountains at different distances and angles fills the eye. Then comes the Bailong Elevator, which holds three world records: at 326 meters, it is the highest outdoor sightseeing elevator in the world; at 5 meters per second, it is the fastest glass sightseeing elevator; and it carries 64 people at once, making it the largest. The 88-second ride to the top passes 48 peaks that line up like generals in formation.
