The experience

You meet your guide at your hotel lobby or Nanjing Railway Station in the morning and decide together what the day looks like. If you want to follow a classic route, the guide has one ready: typically starting at the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum on Purple Mountain, where you hike to the top, learn about 20th-century Chinese history and get a panoramic view of the city. From there, the day might take you to Zhonghua Gate (a castle-style ancient city gate with massive masonry walls and deep arched gateways), then to Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty at the southern foot of Purple Mountain, where animal statues line the pathways and historic architecture sits among beautiful trees.

The flexibility is the point. If you've already seen some of those sites or want something different, you can visit the Memorial of the Nanjing Massacre, the Presidential Palace, Nanjing Museum, Jiming Temple or take a 50-minute boat ride along the Qinhuai River through old riverside buildings. Your guide knows the city and will shape the stops around what you actually want to see. Lunch happens partway through the day at a local restaurant. Entrance fees to attractions are paid separately when you arrive at each one.
