The experience

Start with a morning pickup at your Nanjing hotel or the railway station, then head to Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum on Purple Mountain. The hike takes you through the grounds of the mausoleum, where you'll learn about the father of modern China and the country's 20th-century transformation while taking in a panoramic view of the city below. The mausoleum closes on Mondays, so plan accordingly.

From there, the tour moves to Xiaoling Tomb at the southern foot of Purple Mountain: a Ming Dynasty site with impressive ancient architecture, animal statues lining the pathways, and centuries of history embedded in its design. You'll then visit Zhonghua Gate, a castle-style ancient city gate with massive masonry walls and multiple courtyards that once defended the city, followed by Confucius Temple, where you can see how locals worship the great philosopher and taste snacks on the old street. If time allows, a 50-minute boat ride along Qinhuai River past old buildings is available at your own cost.

The day wraps at Jiming Temple, one of Nanjing's oldest Buddhist temples, where a seven-story pagoda overlooks Xuanwu Lake. Your guide will return you to your hotel or the railway station.
