The experience

You arrive in Nanjing and want to see the city without following a fixed schedule. This tour starts with a morning pickup from your hotel lobby or Nanjing Railway Station, then you and your guide decide what to visit. The sample itinerary includes the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (the father of modern China), where you hike to the top of Purple Mountain for a panoramic view and learn about 20th-century Chinese history; Zhonghua Gate, an ancient castle-style city gate with massive masonry walls and deep arched gateways; the Xiaoling Tomb of Ming Dynasty, with its animal statues and tree-lined pathways; and optionally the Confucius Temple and a 50-minute boat ride along the Qinhuai River through old buildings. If you've already seen some of these, your guide can take you to the Nanjing Massacre Memorial, Presidential Palace, Nanjing Museum, Xuanwu Lake, or Jiming Temple instead.

The tour runs 6 to 8 hours depending on which sites you choose and how long you spend at each one. Your private air-conditioned car and guide are dedicated to your group alone, so the pace is yours to set. Lunch is included and can be adjusted for any dietary requirements you mention at booking. At the end of the day, your guide returns you to your hotel or sees you off at the railway station.

Entrance fees to some attractions are separate: the Ming Tomb costs 10 USD per person and Zhonghua Gate costs 7 USD per person if you select the Private Tour with Lunch option. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and dress for the weather, as the tour operates in all conditions. Public transportation is available nearby if you prefer to explore on your own between stops.
