The experience
Four hours covers two of Nanjing's most significant historical sites. Your guide and driver pick you up at your hotel or train station and head first to Xiaoling Tomb, the resting place of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang and Queen Ma of the Ming Dynasty. The tomb sits on a peaceful path lined with mythical stone animals and surrounded by gardens that shift through peach blossoms in spring, green in summer, and colored foliage in autumn. As you walk the grounds, your guide explains the history and architecture of this UNESCO site, which is one of the largest imperial tombs in China.
The second stop is the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, located in the lush Purple Mountain neighborhood. The site holds the history of twentieth-century China under Sun Yat-sen's leadership, and the elegant design of the mausoleum reflects that era. Walking up the grounds gives views across the whole area. Note that the mausoleum closes every Monday. If your tour falls on that day, your guide will substitute another major site (Ming City Wall and Zhonghua Gate, the Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre, or Confucius Temple), based on the time you have left and what interests you.
The tour ends with drop-off at your Nanjing location. Bottled water is provided throughout, and the car is air-conditioned. If you want to visit additional sites beyond the two main stops, entrance fees for those are separate.
