The experience

The Ming City Wall, built over 600 years ago, anchors the core itinerary. You walk its length and climb to the overlook at Zhonghuamen Gate to see the old city and lake spread below. Before that comes the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, where the path climbs through mountain scenery past the tomb of the founder of the Republic of China, and then the Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty's first emperor, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its own sacred animal statuary and garden walks. The route is not locked: if you want to skip one and visit the Nanjing Massacre Memorial, the Confucius Temple, or the Nanjing Museum instead, your guide will rework the day around it.

Lunch happens mid-afternoon near the Qinghuai River, the oldest river in China, and your guide picks the restaurant based on what you eat: dietary requests are noted at booking.
