The experience
You start with early pickup from your downtown Chengdu hotel and travel by private, air-conditioned van to Mount Qingcheng, one of China's most important Taoism centers. The mountain is densely forested and was featured in Kung Fu Panda 3. On arrival, you ride an electric kart to the entrance, then trek up to Moon City Lake and take a cable car to Shangqing Palace, the mountain's centerpiece. This elaborate temple complex sits at 3,280 feet, dates from the Jin Dynasty (265–420 AD), and was rebuilt in the 1800s. It holds serene temples and an ancient gingko tree. Your guide walks you through the temples and pavilions, explaining the history and core principles of Taoism and how Taoist thought shaped Chinese martial arts and health practices.
The hands-on training happens with a Taoist martial arts master. You learn Tai Chi and Qi Gong with guided practice focusing on fluid movements and energy cultivation, then move into traditional Kung Fu techniques: self-defense forms inspired by Taoist philosophy that emphasize softness overcoming hardness. The session includes meditation and breathing exercises for mindfulness and mental clarity. This is not a demonstration. You are doing the movements yourself under instruction.
After Mount Qingcheng, you travel to Dujiangyan, the world's oldest and only surviving non-dam irrigation facility. Built in the 3rd century BC, it still channels water from the River Minjiang to surrounding farmlands. You visit the Erwang Temple, a grandiose wooden complex on the riverbank built to honor the system's designers, then walk across the Anlan Suspension Bridge to see the Fish Mouth Weir and Bottle-Neck Channel: the engineered sections that funnel river water. You stroll through Lidui Park and its bonsai gardens before returning to your hotel in Chengdu.
