The experience
The Longji Terraced Fields Scenic Area spans 70.1 square kilometers, but this tour focuses on Ping'an Village, where all 190 families belong to the Zhuang minority and share the family name Liao. The terraces climb from 380 to 880 meters above sea level, arranged in patterns the locals call "chains," "belts," "snails" and "towers." Two viewpoints frame the landscape: "Nine Dragons and Five Tigers" looks down the nine ridgelines stretching to the Jinjiang River, while five opposing hillsides stand like guardian figures across the valley.
Your driver picks you up at your hotel between 7:30 a.m., then drives roughly three and a half hours to reach the terraces. You'll walk up into Ping'an Village, spend time exploring the settlement and its daily rhythms, then have an hour free for lunch (not included). The hike itself covers the top of the terraced fields for two hours, moving across the contoured landscape before you walk back down through the village. The return drive takes about two and a half hours, landing you back at your hotel by 6:30 p.m.
An English-speaking guide travels with you throughout, explaining the Zhuang way of life and the engineering of the terraces. The vehicle is air-conditioned for the long drives, and all entry fees and taxes are covered in the price.
