The Experience

You start by telling the guide what you want to see. Victoria Peak sits at 552 meters and offers a lookout point with views of the harbor and city skyline — a 15-minute walk from where the car drops you. Or skip it and head to Victoria Harbour instead, where ferries and cargo ships move constantly past the surrounding scenery. The Star Ferry has run since 1888 and still carries passengers between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon; you ride it if you choose it, and the guide rides with you. Markets are scattered across the city: Stanley Market on the south side sells clothing and handicrafts with ocean views; the Ladies Market in Mong Kok runs over a kilometer with haggling expected; the Goldfish Market specializes in rare and tropical species kept for feng shui luck; the Flower Market sells auspicious blooms year-round. Neighborhoods shift the focus from sightseeing to how people actually live — Sheung Wan blends traditional Chinese businesses with modern shops; Sham Shui Po offers cheap street food and open-air markets; Kowloon City spans old streets, leafy areas and the former Kai Tak Airport site, with Little Thailand and Chiu Chow communities side by side.

The car is air-conditioned and seats five passengers plus your guide and driver. You choose how long the tour runs — 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 hours — and when it starts, anywhere from 8 am to 6 pm. The guide speaks English, Chinese or Cantonese and knows which stops take 20 minutes, which take an hour, and how to fit them into the time you've booked. Temples like Man Mo (built in 1847 and filled with hanging incense coils) or Wong Tai Sin (where people make wishes) are optional. So are the architectural landmarks — the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator is the longest outdoor escalator in the world and takes 20–25 minutes to ride; Two International Finance Centre towers 420 meters above the waterfront; the Clock Tower dates to 1915. You can walk through SoHo's narrow streets and art galleries, explore Cat Street for antiques and jade, or ride the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade with the Hong Kong Island skyline as your backdrop. Nothing is mandatory. If you tire easily or find the summer humidity difficult, the car keeps you comfortable between stops.

Infants and small children travel in a pram, stroller or car seat (available on request, with a charge for infant seats). Children under 8 or shorter than 1.35 meters must use a safety restraint, so mention their age and height when you book. Tours finishing after 9 pm carry a surcharge, as do departures before 8 am. Chinese New Year bookings incur an additional holiday surcharge. Peak Tram tickets to the top of Victoria Peak are not included and cost extra. Meals, drinks and gratuities are your own.
