The experience

The tour starts at 9am with pickup from your downtown Chengdu hotel. Your guide will take you first to Qingyang Palace, a Taoist temple with over 1,000 years of history and the largest collection of Taoist texts in China. Despite sitting in the busy city center, the temple grounds are quiet enough to step back from the street noise. From there you move to Du Fu Cottage, the former home of a Tang dynasty poet who lived here for nearly four years and wrote more than 240 poems reflecting on the suffering of ordinary people: his work shaped the course of Chinese literature. Lunch happens at a local restaurant where you'll taste Sichuan cuisine.

The afternoon takes you to Wuhou Memorial Temple, built to honor Zhuge Liang, a strategist from the Three Kingdoms Period and a symbol of wisdom in Chinese culture. Nearby sits Jinli Ancient Street, a pedestrian area lined with stalls selling local snacks and souvenirs where you can wander and eat at your own pace. Your guide drops you back at your hotel at the end of the day.
