The Experience

You get picked up at your Beijing hotel in a private air-conditioned car and driven roughly 75 kilometers to Mutianyu, about an hour and a half away. The driver and English-speaking guide handle all the navigation and timing, so you sit back and watch the landscape change. Once you arrive, your VIP pass lets you skip the internal shuttle bus lines—you move straight to the cable car or chairlift that takes you up the mountain. The guide walks with you the whole way, pointing out the beacon towers, arrow holes and sections of wall that date back to the Ming Dynasty, and explaining how the structure wound through these mountains as a military defense system.
