The Experience

I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice at Mutianyu would be the smell of pine — sharp, almost sweet, as we stepped out of the car. Our driver, Mr. Chen, grinned when I tried to say “Mutianyu” in Mandarin. (He laughed and said it better for me. I’m still not sure I got it right.) The drive from Beijing took about an hour and a half, but it didn’t feel long — maybe because we left early and watched the city slowly fade into mountains.

At the wall itself, there’s this odd quiet between tour groups passing by. You can hear wind scraping over stone and sometimes a distant shout from another tower. We took the cable car up — honestly, my legs thanked me later — and then wandered along those old stones that snake up and down like something alive. The wall at Mutianyu is less crowded than Badaling (that’s what our guide said), so sometimes it felt like we had whole stretches to ourselves. It’s hard to explain how heavy those stones feel under your hands, knowing they’ve been here for centuries.

I tried sliding down on the chairlift after (my partner made fun of how slow I went). There was a family from Shandong who offered us sunflower seeds while we waited — salty and warm in my palm. If you pick Badaling instead, it’s busier but has these massive watchtowers you can climb inside. Either way, having someone local with us made things smoother; Mr. Chen even pointed out where emperors used to send signals with smoke. We could stop whenever we wanted for photos or just to stare out at all that green.

On the way back, I dozed off for a bit in the car — sunburned nose pressed against the window, shoes dusty. It’s funny what sticks: the echo of voices bouncing off stone, or how everyone seems smaller from up there. I still think about that view sometimes when Beijing feels too loud.
