The Experience

Honestly, I almost missed the pickup because I couldn’t figure out which exit to use at PEK — but our driver, Mr. Zhang, just texted “No rush, I’m here.” That tiny moment of patience already made me feel less like a lost tourist and more like someone being looked after. The car was spotless and there was bottled water waiting (which I didn’t realize how much I’d need until later). We left the airport behind in this weird gray morning light, and the city faded out fast — suddenly it was all hills and little villages with red lanterns still hanging from doorways.

The drive to Mutianyu Great Wall took about 90 minutes. Mr. Zhang pointed out when we passed Bohai Town — he said his grandmother used to sell peaches by the road here in summer. I liked that detail for some reason. When we arrived, he explained my options: climb up on foot (nope), take the cable car (yes), or do the chairlift up and toboggan down (tempting). He even helped me buy tickets since my Mandarin is… well, let’s say Li at the ticket booth definitely laughed at my pronunciation. The air up there smelled sharp and cold, like pine needles and old stone walls. There weren’t many people — just a couple of local families sharing snacks on the steps.

I walked along the wall for maybe an hour, stopping every few towers just to catch my breath or stare down at those endless green valleys. My hands got numb holding onto the rough stones (they give you jackets if you ask). It’s hard to explain but standing there — wind in your face, hearing nothing but distant birds and your own boots scraping — you sort of forget about airports and flight schedules for a minute.
