The Experience

We’d barely gotten out of the car in Mutianyu when our driver, Mr. Zhang, pointed at a tiny noodle stand and grinned—“breakfast?” It was barely 9am but the air smelled like fresh dough and I couldn’t say no. The woman behind the counter handed me a bowl, steaming even in the cool spring air. Her hands moved so fast, I almost missed it—she laughed when I tried to thank her in Mandarin (I probably butchered it). That’s how our private day trip to the Great Wall started: not with grand speeches, just noodles and a smile.

The drive from Beijing took about 90 minutes, enough time for our guide Li to tell us stories about Ming Dynasty generals and why this section—Mutianyu—is less crowded than Badaling. Going up, you see how the wall snakes through green hills—honestly, it’s more massive than any photo can show. I touched one of the old bricks—rough, cold—and tried to imagine what it was like centuries ago.

Li nudged us toward the toboggan ride for our way down. I hesitated (I’m not exactly adventurous), but my partner was already halfway into his helmet. The track twists for over a kilometer—it’s fast but not scary, just pure fun. Kids were shrieking ahead of us; I might’ve yelled too. By the time we reached the bottom, my cheeks hurt from grinning so much. We ended up back at that noodle stand for round two because… why not? The sun had come out by then and everything felt lighter somehow.
