The experience
The tour opens with airport or train station pickup and a transfer to your hotel in Zhangjiajie City, leaving the rest of day one free to settle in. Day two focuses on the northern peaks: the Bailong elevator takes you straight up to Yuanjiajie, where the sandstone mountains that inspired Avatar's floating islands rise in a near-level platform, then a sightseeing bus carries you to Tianzi Mountain Peak Forest for views across the whole scenic area. Your guide handles the logistics. Optional evening shows (Fairy Fox or Zhangjiajie Charming Western Hunan) are available if you want them.
Day three splits between two parts of the National Forest Park. You cable car up to Huangshi Village at 1080 meters (there's a saying that skipping it means you haven't truly visited Zhangjiajie), then walk the Golden Whip Stream, a 7.5-kilometer route through steep cliffs and serene valleys. If the full walk doesn't suit you, the itinerary includes a tea-picking activity in the afternoon instead: you harvest tea leaves yourself, watch the processing at a local factory, taste the finished tea, and learn the ceremony from staff there. Lunch is included both days.
Day four moves to Tianmen Mountain National Park, 30 kilometers away. You start underground at Yellow Dragon Cave, a UNESCO-recognized limestone cavern with 100,000 square meters of space, two underground rivers, four waterfalls and 13 chambers. Then the cable car takes over: at 7,200 meters, it's the longest in Asia, and from it you photograph the Avenue toward Heaven, a road with 99 hairpin turns carved into the mountainside. On top, you walk the Cliff-Hanging Walkway and the Glass Sky Walk before descending through Tianmen Cave, a natural tunnel through the mountain. Your guide and driver then escort you to the airport or railway station.
