Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Rano Kau and Orongo Village
- Explore Rano Kau caldera and wetlands
- Walk circuit around Orongo Ceremonial Village
The experience
The tour starts at a time chosen to sidestep the busiest hours, giving you room to move through the landscape without the press of other groups. Your guide drives you in an air-conditioned vehicle (pickup happens at your hotel), and the three-hour itinerary unfolds around two sites. Rano Kau itself is a massive caldera with a freshwater lake inside. The rim offers views across multiple angles of the volcanic formation, and the guide explains how the geology shaped the island's history.
From there you walk a circuit around Orongo Ceremonial Village, where over fifty stone houses still stand. These were built for the Koro Manu ritual, the Birdman competition, held every spring during the later stages of Rapa Nui's settlement. The guide stops along the trail to share insights about the ceremony and what these ruins tell about the island's heritage. The pace is deliberate, built for conversation and observation rather than coverage.
Wind conditions at Orongo are regulated under new park rules, so access depends on the day's weather. Your guide will know before departure whether the site is open. The National Park Ticket is required separately and is not included in this tour price.
