The experience
If you've just arrived on Easter Island or have a full day free, this tour anchors itself in the archaeology rather than the checklist. You start at Tahai, the island's oldest inhabited area, where three monumental ahu stand among the remains of other structures: the guide walks you through what the site reveals about Rapa Nui's early culture and pays homage to William T. Mulloy, the American archaeologist who spent decades here. From there the tour moves through the island's narrative arc: the Vaihu district's fallen ahu, a ceremonial center with more than a dozen collapsed statues facing an ancient village, and then the two sites that anchor the day.
Ahu Tongariki is Polynesia's largest ceremonial monument, and you walk its full expanse before moving to the petroglyph site of Papa Tataku Poki nearby, where the carvings connect to the island's warfare legends. Rano Raraku, the quarry where the moai were carved, holds the real weight of the day: nearly 400 statues remain there in different stages of the carving process, some barely started, others nearly complete. The guide takes you through every feature of the site, including (weather permitting) the small caldera at the top. This is where you see the scale of the project and the abruptness of its end.
The tour runs five to eight hours depending on how much time you spend at each site and whether conditions allow the climb to Rano Raraku's crater. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your guide, so the pace stays yours: no rushing to keep a group moving, no waiting for stragglers. The guide speaks English or Spanish and can adjust the focus if you have particular interests in the island's history, geology or the theories around the moai's construction and collapse.

What exactly happened to the moai on Easter Island?
The tour covers both the creation of the statues at Rano Raraku and their systematic destruction across the island. At sites like Ahu Tongariki and Vaihu, you see the fallen moai and learn the historical and cultural reasons for the collapse, as well as how modern myths about the island's decline differ from what the archaeology shows.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
You walk extensively at each site: Tahai, the ceremonial centers, and especially Rano Raraku, where the terrain is uneven and the quarry itself requires sustained walking. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and infants must sit on an adult's lap during vehicle travel.
Can I customize the tour if I'm interested in specific aspects of Easter Island's history?
Yes, the tour is thematically focused on the moai's rise and fall, but it can be customized to your particular interests, whether that's the geology, the settlement patterns, the petroglyph traditions, or other topics in Rapa Nui's history.
What's included in the price, and what do I need to arrange separately?
The tour includes private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle and a guide in English or Spanish. You'll need to purchase a separate National Park ticket to enter the archaeological sites. This is required and not included in the tour price.
