The experience
The Birdman ceremony was the last major ritual on Easter Island before the arrival of Christianity, and Orongo Ceremonial Village is where it took place every year. Perched on one side of Rano Kau crater, Orongo sits at the edge of a 1.5-kilometer volcanic crater that holds the island's largest reserve of endemic plants and once served as the main source of drinking water. Your guide walks you through the ceremonial complex and explains the Tangata Manu, the Birdman, ritual that defined the final stage of Rapa Nui culture.
The tour moves through four other major sites that show how the island's builders worked and what they valued. Tahai, restored in 1974 by American archaeologist William Mulloy, is a complex of three principal ahu near town and a popular spot for sunset photos. Puna Pau is the quarry where red volcanic stone was extracted for the moai's topknots, or Pu Kao. You'll see 23 cylindrical prototypes at different stages of carving. Ahu Akivi stands inland (one of the few ceremonial platforms not by the sea) with seven restored moai positioned to face the setting sun, aligned with astronomical markers.
A private vehicle picks you up from your hotel and carries you across the island for the full six hours. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and brings bottled water for the day. The tour is suited to all fitness levels, and if you're traveling with an infant, specialized car seats are available.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What exactly is the Birdman Cult and why was it important on Easter Island?
The Birdman Cult, or Tangata Manu, was the last major ceremonial practice before Christianity reached the island. Every year, competitors gathered at Orongo Ceremonial Village to race down the cliffs and swim to offshore islets to retrieve the first sooty tern egg of the season. The winner's clan gained prestige and resources for the year. It represented a shift in power from the moai-building era to a new ritual system centered on this annual competition.
How long is the drive between each archaeological site?
The tour covers five sites across Easter Island over six hours total, including travel time and time spent at each location. Tahai is closest to town and popular for sunset, while Ahu Akivi and Puna Pau are farther inland. Your guide manages the route to fit all five sites into a single day without rushing.
Will I see restored moai on this tour?
Yes. Tahai has three restored ahu, and Ahu Akivi features seven moai that were restored to standing position by archaeologists William Mulloy and Gonzalo Figueroa. Puna Pau shows the quarry where the red stone topknots were carved, with 23 prototypes visible at different stages of work.
Is the Rano Kau crater accessible to walk around?
Rano Kau crater is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes on the island and is part of the tour itinerary. The crater is 1.5 kilometers across and holds the island's largest reserve of endemic plants. Your guide will show you the crater and explain its role as an ancient water source and ceremonial site.
Do I need to buy a separate ticket for the national park?
Yes, a national park ticket is required and is valid for ten days from your first entry, covering all park sites on the island. The ticket is not included in the tour price and must be purchased separately. Your guide can advise on where to buy it.
