The experience

The tour starts with a 30-minute drive to Ahu Akivi, the only place on the island where the moai face the sea instead of inland. You'll spend an hour exploring the seven statues and the stories attached to them: mysteries that remain even in one of the world's most isolated places. From there, the guide takes you to Puna Pau, the quarry where the famous red cylinders called pukao are carved and left unfinished in the rock. The panoramic views sweep 180 degrees across the island, and this is where you see the scale of the work that went into the moai themselves.

The route climbs Rano Kau volcano, one of the most impressive natural features on Rapa Nui, and takes about an hour to walk the rim. The crater itself functioned as a natural greenhouse and holds significance in oral tradition as a place visited by an important figure named Haumaka. From the volcano, you move to Orongo Ceremonial Village, where the Birdman competition was held: a ritual in which the island's greatest warriors risked their lives to become Supreme Leader. The guide walks you through the site and explains what took place there.

The whole outing runs between two and four hours depending on pace and how long you spend at each stop. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, and your accommodation pickup is arranged when you book. Bring your own water if you have a preference. The tour carries local bottled water. At the end, you'll have time to find a place to eat before heading back.
