The Experience

We were already shivering a bit when we climbed into the van in San Pedro — it was still dark, and honestly, I questioned my life choices at that hour. But as we drove out toward El Tatio Geysers, the world slowly lit up: first just hints of pink on the volcanoes, then that dry Atacama wind sneaking through the window crack. Our guide, Carlos, handed out coca tea (tastes kind of grassy but helps with altitude) and pointed out where vicuñas sometimes cross the road. The drive is about an hour and a half — long enough for me to doze off and wake up with my forehead against the glass. Not glamorous, but real.

I didn’t expect how loud El Tatio would be — hissing, bubbling, these plumes of steam shooting up ten meters or more. Everyone’s breath made little clouds in the freezing air (it was way below zero), so you couldn’t really tell what was geyser and what was human half the time. Carlos explained how this is one of the largest geothermal fields anywhere, but honestly I was too busy watching sunlight hit the steam to take it all in. My fingers went numb trying to snap photos; I think I gave up after a while just to stand there.

After we’d had our fill (and lost feeling in our toes), we drove on to Geyser Blanco. It’s quieter here — a river with these strange little internal geysers popping up along the banks.
