The experience
The tour opens in Moon Valley, where erosion has carved the Cordillera de la Sal into formations that look like another planet. You cross the valley to visit the famous rock shapes, then watch the desert shift color at sunset from a natural viewpoint, with volcanoes filling the horizon. The next day splits into two parts: an astrophysics tour at night where an astronomer and archeologist help you identify the dark constellations unique to this region and photograph the Milky Way through telescopes, then a daytime run to the hidden lagoons of Baltinache an hour southeast of town. Only the first and last of the five lagoons allow swimming, but the salt content is so high you float without effort, like the Dead Sea. Showers and bathrooms are at the entrance so you can rinse off before the return journey and another desert sunset.
The final day starts before dawn for the drive to El Tatio Geysers in the Altiplano. After an hour and a half climbing into the Andes, you reach 4,200 meters where 80 geysers release steam columns across the geothermal field. Breakfast happens on-site to refuel, then you walk the field and can visit a rustic well within it. The tour ends back in San Pedro de Atacama.

What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.
What are the El Tatio Geysers and why do they matter?
El Tatio is a geothermal field in the Andes at 4,200 meters altitude with 80 active geysers, one of the world's unique natural spectacles. You see the steam columns rise across the field after a dawn arrival, when the temperature contrast makes them most visible, and breakfast happens on-site before you walk the area.
Can I swim in the hidden lagoons, and what's it like?
The Baltinache lagoons include five pools, and only the first and last allow swimming. The salt content is so high you float without sinking, similar to the Dead Sea. Bathrooms and showers are at the entrance so you can rinse the salt off before heading back to town.
What happens on the astrophysics night?
An astronomer and archeological expert lead the tour at night, teaching you to identify the dark constellations unique to this region and their cultural meaning. Real-time astrophotography captures the Milky Way through telescopes, and you see the best deep sky objects visible that night.
How much driving is involved each day?
Day one is a local drive to Moon Valley in the Cordillera de la Sal. Day two includes an hour's drive southeast to the hidden lagoons. Day three involves an hour and a half of climbing into the Andes to reach the geysers at altitude.
