The experience
The tour picks you up from your hotel between 2:30 and 3:10 p.m., then drives into the Cordillera de la Sal to reach Moon Valley. The landscape gets its name from Jesuit priest Gustavo Le Paige, who explored the area and noticed its lunar characteristics. The dunes and valleys really do look like another planet's surface. You'll visit the Three Marias, the Great Dune and the Amphitheater, the main formations that make the valley distinctive. A bilingual guide (Spanish and English) explains the geological history and the natural processes that shaped these salt formations.
The highlight is Mirador de Kari, also called Coyote's Stone, a viewpoint that opens onto panoramic views of the entire valley with the Andes on the horizon. This is where most people stop to photograph. The tour then holds at this spot for sunset, when the golden light transforms the landscape into warm colors. After the sun sets, you return to San Pedro de Atacama and are dropped at the municipal parking lot, about a block and a half from the Plaza, arriving around 7:30 p.m.
