Red rocks, two high-altitude lagoons, and a village church in one day

A 12-hour private tour from San Pedro de Atacama that moves through four stops: the red oxidized rocks of Piedras Rojas at 4,200 meters, the Miscanti and Meñiques lagoons fed by glacial melt in the Andes, the flamingo-filled Laguna Chaxa in Los Flamencos National Reserve, and the adobe architecture and crafts of Toconao village. A Spanish and English-speaking guide leads the route. Hotel pickup, breakfast and lunch en route are included. Entrance tickets to the lagoons and Piedras Rojas are not included and are paid directly at each site.

The experience

The day starts with a 40-minute drive south from San Pedro to the Tropic of Capricorn, where you stop for photos and breakfast before heading into the Andes. From there the route climbs toward the altiplanic lagoons, passing through Socaire village and its church on the way up to 4,200 meters. The landscape shifts from desert floor to high-altitude terrain marked by volcanoes and mountain ridges.

At Miscanti and Meñiques lagoons you spend two hours walking the trails around water born from groundwater and melting ice, with the Miscanti hill and Meñiques volcano framing the view. The route then descends toward Piedras Rojas, a salt flat where natural oxidation has turned the rocks deep red and orange: roughly 90 minutes of driving and a 1.5-hour walk through the colored formations. On the return you stop at Laguna Chaxa in the Los Flamencos National Reserve, a 60-minute walk through trails where flamingos gather at the water's edge. The final stop is Toconao village, where you walk through the square, visit the church and see local crafts before the 30-minute drive back to San Pedro.

The tour operates as a shared vehicle with other travelers, and the guide handles the route and timing. Breakfast happens at a stop near the Tropic of Capricorn. Lunch is en route, typically between the high lagoons and Piedras Rojas. Entrance tickets to Miscanti and Meñiques ($10,000 CLP), Chaxa ($8,000 CLP) and Piedras Rojas ($10,000 CLP) are paid separately at each site and are not part of the tour price.

Is this one for you?The tour climbs to 4,200 meters and involves roughly five hours of walking spread across four sites, so it suits travelers with strong cardiovascular fitness and comfort at high altitude. The full day, 12 hours from pickup to drop-off, packs four distinct landscapes into one route, which works if you want the high-altitude lagoons, the red rocks and the village in a single outing rather than splitting them across multiple days.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Piedras Rojas and why are the rocks red?

Piedras Rojas is a salt flat in the Salar de Talar where rocks have turned deep red and orange through natural oxidation and weathering. The colored formations sit at high altitude in the Andes and are reached by a 1.5-hour walk from the vehicle.

How high do we climb on this tour?

The tour reaches approximately 4,200 meters elevation at the Miscanti and Meñiques lagoons in the Andes. The altitude gain happens gradually over the morning as you drive from San Pedro toward the high-altitude sites.

What kind of walking is involved?

You walk for roughly two hours around the Miscanti and Meñiques lagoons, 60 minutes on trails at Laguna Chaxa, 1.5 hours through Piedras Rojas, and 30 minutes in Toconao village. The walks are on established trails and through the sites themselves, not technical hiking.

Are the entrance fees included in the tour price?

Entrance tickets are not included and are paid directly at each site: $10,000 CLP for Miscanti and Meñiques, $8,000 CLP for Chaxa, and $10,000 CLP for Piedras Rojas. The guide will stop at each entrance so you can purchase tickets before entering.

What time does the tour start and end?

The tour lasts 12 hours total and includes hotel pickup from San Pedro de Atacama at the start and drop-off at the center at the end. The exact departure time is arranged when you book.

Is this tour suitable for someone visiting the Atacama for the first time?

The tour covers the main high-altitude sites around San Pedro (the colored rocks, the glacial lagoons and the flamingo reserve) in a single day. It requires a high level of physical fitness and involves sustained walking at altitude, so it suits travelers comfortable with that level of exertion.
