The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the crunch of salt under my boots when we stepped out at Piedras Rojas. The wind was sharp — not freezing, but enough to make you pull your jacket tighter. Our guide, Carla, handed us mugs of coca tea (she called it “Andean rocket fuel”), and pointed out how the rocks really do look redder when the sun’s just coming up.
