Pickup, meals, and a bilingual guide are included; entrance fees are paid separately at each site.

The Experience

"The rocks change color depending on the light and the minerals," our guide said as we pulled away from San Pedro de Atacama toward Toconao. He wasn't exaggerating — by mid-morning, when we stopped at Piedras Rojas, the salt flats had turned rust and gold under the sun, the oxidized minerals catching the angle like nothing you'd see at lower elevation. The day starts early with pickup from your hotel, breakfast on the way, and a route that takes you through five distinct stops across the Atacama's southern reaches, climbing steadily toward the Andes.

Toconao comes first — a small adobe village where the square and church sit quiet in the morning, and locals still work with traditional crafts the way they have for generations. It's the kind of place that feels like it exists outside the tour circuit, which is partly why it matters. From there, the itinerary moves southeast toward higher ground. You'll stop at the Tropic of Capricorn marker (one of those moments that's more satisfying than you'd expect), then head into Los Flamencos National Reserve to see Chaxa Lagoon, where the water reflects the sky so clearly it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. The reserve itself covers 740 square kilometers, and you're seeing just the edge of it.

The real altitude work happens in the afternoon. After a lunch break in the Socaire village — where you'll visit the local church and learn how people farm at this elevation — the route climbs to around 4,200 meters above sea level to reach the Miscanti and Meñiques lagoons. Both are fed by groundwater from melting ice high in the cordillera, and the volcanoes that frame them (Miscanti hill and Meñiques volcano among them) make the landscape feel genuinely remote. There's a short trek of about an hour once you're up there, which is manageable but requires decent fitness — the altitude is real, and the tour's minimum age is 12 and maximum is 75, partly because of the elevation and the physical demand. Pregnant travelers aren't recommended for this one, and cardiovascular fitness matters.

The day wraps with a return to San Pedro de Atacama in the evening. What you're paying for is the shared transportation, the bilingual driver-guide, breakfast and lunch en route, and the logistics of hitting five stops across terrain that would be hard to navigate on your own. What you're not paying for — and this matters — are the entrance fees to the sites themselves; you pay those directly at each location. Bring cash, sunscreen, and water. The altitude sneaks up on you.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want to see the Atacama's high-altitude lagoons and red rock formations without arranging your own transport and navigation — the fixed itinerary and included meals handle the logistics, though you'll need good fitness for the 4,200-meter altitude and the trekking section.

What's the altitude like?
The tour climbs to around 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) at the Miscanti and Meñiques lagoons. The altitude gain is gradual, but cardiovascular fitness is required, and the tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with poor heart health.
Are entrance fees included?
No. Entrance fees to Los Flamencos National Reserve and other sites are paid separately at each location. The tour includes transportation, guide, breakfast, and lunch.
What's the minimum age?

Can I do this if I'm not very fit?
The tour requires a high level of physical fitness due to the altitude and the one-hour trek. If you have any concerns about cardiovascular health or altitude tolerance, check with the operator before booking.
