Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Starfish Point and Bio Bay
- Drive 40 minutes to East End
- Visit Starfish Point and explore waters
- Swim in bioluminescent bay with guide
- Return to accommodation
The experience
The tour runs three hours total from hotel pickup to return, with a 40-minute drive across Grand Cayman to reach Starfish Point on the East End. You arrive as the light turns golden, the water stays calm and clear, and the moment is built for photos and wading in shallow water. The stop itself lasts long enough to move at your own pace: no rushing through, no crowded boardwalk. After Starfish Point, the boat heads to Cayman Kai and waits for full darkness, when the bioluminescence becomes visible.
Once the plankton light up, you slip into the water with fins, snorkel and mask (all provided), and a certified guide in the water with you explains what you're seeing as it happens. The glow is real but varies each night depending on conditions and moon phase (some nights brighter, some subtler), so the display is never quite the same twice. If you'd rather stay dry, the boat deck gives you a front-row view without getting in. The water is warm and shallow enough that the experience works for swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
Round-trip transport leaves from Seven Mile Beach hotels only, and the boat carries a small group rather than a crowd. You get water, fruit punch, a life vest, snorkel gear, and entry to the Cayman Islands Marine Park. Bring your own towel. The tour runs rain or shine, and start times shift with the seasons to catch the best light at Starfish Point and the darkest sky at the bay.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What exactly happens when you swim in the bioluminescent bay?
Millions of microscopic plankton glow when the water moves around you: your arms, your legs, the guide's movements all trigger the light. The glow is brightest in the darkest conditions, and a local guide in the water explains the science as you swim, so you understand what's creating the effect.
Can you actually see the glow, or is it too faint to notice?
The bioluminescence is real and visible, but its intensity varies each night based on water conditions, moon phase and plankton density. Some nights the glow is vivid. Other nights it's more subtle. The operator notes that every visit is uniquely spectacular because of this natural unpredictability.
What is Starfish Point, and what do you do there?
Starfish Point is a shallow, calm cove on Grand Cayman's East End known as a sunset spot. You explore the shallow waters, look for upside-down jellyfish, and take photos as the light turns golden. It's the first stop before the boat moves to the bioluminescent bay after dark.
Do you have to get in the water, or can you watch from the boat?
You can choose. A guided swim in the glowing water is the main event, and snorkel gear is provided. If you'd rather stay dry, the boat deck offers a viewing option so you can watch the plankton light up without entering the water.
Is the tour suitable if you're not a strong swimmer?
Yes. The bioluminescent bay has calm, shallow water, and a life vest is provided. The experience works for all fitness levels, though the operator notes it's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
