The experience

Four hours splits between two parts: a 2-hour trek through Calabaceira Valley and a guided walk through Cidade Velha's colonial structures. The hike starts after pickup from your accommodation in Praia and heads into the green volcanic valley, following an easy, one-way trail that descends about 186 meters over roughly 5 kilometers. You'll pass the famous giant baobab tree that Charles Darwin noted during his visit to Santiago, and walk past local farms growing sugar cane, mango, cassava and banana. The path narrows at the start but stays safe, and the terrain is medium tilt with medium-quality footing.

The second half moves through Cidade Velha's layered history. You'll see the Convent of São Francisco, built in the mid-17th century as a place of worship and formation, and walk the first urbanized street the Portuguese built in sub-Saharan Africa. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, completed in 1495 in Manueline (Portuguese Gothic) style, is the oldest colonial church in the world. The Pelourinho, built in 1512 with white marble, once served as a slave market. The ruins of the Sé Catedral (the first cathedral the Portuguese built in Africa) stand nearby. São Filipe Fortress, built in 1587 to defend against pirate attacks, offers views over the whole old town and explains the defensive system. Entry costs €5 per person and is not included in the tour price. The tour ends with drop-off at your accommodation in Praia.

A live guide leads the experience in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French. You can book a shared group hike or arrange a private option. Children from age 6 are welcome, though the trek is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health. Wear hiking pants (especially August through November), sturdy footwear, a hat, sunscreen and bring water.
