The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Praia hotel and heads inland toward the green valley of Órgãos, where the volcanic mountains rise dramatically. Your guide explains how subsistence agriculture works on the island as you stop for photos of the landscape. The route then climbs to Pico de Antónia, Santiago's highest point at 1,394 meters, where the view opens across the entire island—on a clear day you can see the Principal Valley spread below and the island's interior taking shape all at once.

Assomada Market is a working African market where farmers sell tropical fruits, vegetables, and coconut palms grown locally. You walk through it with your guide, see what the community grows and trades, and have the chance to buy fresh coconut water straight from the farmers or pick up souvenirs if you want them. If time allows, the tour includes a stop in the town center to see the City Hall, Central Square, and the Church. At 800 meters elevation, another photo stop gives you panoramic views and a chance to learn about the island's fauna and flora from your guide.

The afternoon turns toward the coast. Tarrafal Beach is the island's most popular, with soft white sand and clear water—you can swim or walk the shoreline, and lunch happens at a local restaurant where you eat the region's traditional food. From there the route follows the coastal road toward Calheta, one of the island's most scenic drives, passing through fishing villages where traditional life by the sea is still visible. The final stop is Pedra Badejo, in one of Santiago's greenest valleys, where banana and coconut palms grow in the country's largest concentration. Farmers here sell fresh coconut water and local fruits directly, and after this stop you're dropped back at your hotel.
