The experience

The hike covers roughly 9 kilometers over 4 to 5 hours of walking, with an elevation gain of around 660 meters and a steeper descent of 1,280 meters. The trail is one-way, narrow and tilted in places, with sections requiring level 1 climbing over rocky ground. Your guide meets you at your hotel in Praia and drives you to Monte Txota Natural Park, where the ascent begins through unspoilt terrain dotted with plants and bird species found nowhere else. The path winds upward through the park before opening onto agricultural fields where corn, mango, coffee and tomato grow depending on the season.

At the summit, you stop to eat a sandwich, fruit and drink soft juice while taking in views across Santiago Island and, weather permitting, spotting Fogo Island's volcano on the horizon. The descent is the harder part of the day: steep rocky sections demand careful footing before the trail flattens into the agricultural zone again. As you approach Longueira, the landscape fills with small houses carved into the mountainside, and you walk among them to visit a local family. This is not a staged encounter but a genuine stop in someone's home, where you see how they live day to day in this remote settlement.

The entire outing lasts about 6 hours from pickup to drop-off. Hiking shoes are essential, and hiking pants are highly recommended from August to October. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and walking sticks. The route is graded difficult and suited only to walkers with solid fitness and no health concerns. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular issues or pregnancy.
