The Experience

I should’ve known I’d forget my rain jacket. Our guide, Sam, just grinned and handed me a spare umbrella before we even left downtown Vancouver—apparently it happens all the time. The city was buzzing that morning, but inside the van it felt like we were setting off with old friends. Stanley Park came up fast: mossy air, cedar everywhere, and those totem poles standing quietly in the drizzle. Sam told us about the artists who carved them—she knew their names by heart—and I caught myself running my fingers over the wood when no one was looking. It felt heavier than I expected.

Capilano Suspension Bridge was next. Honestly? I thought it would be scarier. Free time there meant wandering past buskers and pottery stalls; I lost track of everyone for a bit but didn’t mind at all. Later we drove through Chinatown (just glimpses from the window), then walked Gastown’s cobblestones where a crowd waited for that steam clock to do its thing. It’s louder than you’d think.

The Vancouver Lookout Tower was last—up in seconds, suddenly looking down at everything we’d just crossed on foot or by van. The city looked small from up there but somehow more alive too. I still think about that view when I picture Vancouver now—gray light on glass buildings, mountains behind everything. We ended back downtown with tired legs and Sam waving us off into the evening drizzle.
