The Experience

The moment you step out onto the Niagara Parkway, the falls are already lit—white and gold against the dark sky, the mist rising in layers. You start with a walk through Oakes Garden Theatre, the formal gardens at the entrance, before heading down to the dock where the Niagara City Cruises boat is waiting. The boat ride takes you right to the base of the falls, close enough to feel the spray and hear the roar without any barrier between you and the water.

From the boat you see the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls on the U.S. side—the American Falls wider and more powerful, Bridal Veil narrower and more delicate beside it. Then comes the Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three, curving like its name. The boat circles so you see them from different angles, and the night lighting makes the water look almost solid, like it's falling in sheets of white silk. After the boat ride, you head to Journey Behind the Falls, where tunnels take you down behind the Horseshoe Falls itself. You stand on observation decks carved into the rock, with the water thundering past just feet away on the other side. It's loud and wet and close in a way the boat ride isn't—you're not looking at the falls anymore, you're inside them.

The tour includes the Falls Incline Railway, a short steep funicular that drops you from Table Rock down to the main tourist area, then brings you back up. After that comes the Skylon Tower, where you take the elevator up to the observation deck and see the whole scene from above—the illuminated falls, the river gorge, the lights of both the Canadian and American sides spread out below. The tower has both indoor and outdoor viewing areas, so you can step outside if the weather holds. The whole evening runs through the main attractions without you having to buy separate tickets or figure out the order yourself; everything is timed and included.
