Summary

Banff’s wild shapes, mountain air and the lake’s quiet green

You’ll feel dwarfed by Banff’s hoodoos before gliding up Sulphur Mountain on the gondola with a local guide who knows every story. If you’re lucky with timing, set out onto Lake Minnewanka for an hour-long cruise surrounded by silent peaks and crisp mountain air. It’s a half-day that leaves its mark long after you leave.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so tiny standing by those hoodoos outside Banff — they look like something from another planet, all wind-carved and leaning into the sky. Our guide, Mark (born here, knew every local shortcut), told us how the Blackfoot people believed spirits lived in these rocks. The air had that sharp pine smell you only get in the Rockies. I kept trying to photograph it but honestly, it never looks the same as when you’re there.

The Banff Gondola was next — I thought I’d be nervous about heights, but somehow it felt calm gliding up Sulphur Mountain. There was this weird hush except for the occasional creak of cables and someone’s kid giggling behind us. At the top, sunlight bounced off snow patches even though it was almost summer. Mark pointed out Tunnel Mountain and Bow Falls down below; he joked that locals call Tunnel Mountain “Sleeping Buffalo” because of its shape (I squinted, not sure I saw it). The view just keeps going — you can see why people drive hours for this.

Afterwards we drove out to Lake Minnewanka. The name means “Water of the Spirits” — Mark made me repeat it in Stoney Nakoda and laughed at my accent (can’t blame him). The lake cruise is only on from June to October, so we lucked out. Out on the water, you get this cold breeze on your face and everything smells clean and wet — like glacier melt. There were moments where everyone just went quiet watching for eagles or maybe a bear along the shore (we didn’t see one but I swear I heard something moving in the trees). Even now, sometimes I close my eyes and remember that green-blue water stretching out under those jagged peaks.
