Algonquin Park hike and canoe trip

  • Depart Toronto early morning
  • Hike scenic trails in Algonquin Park
  • Visit lookout over Muskoka
  • Guided canoe trip on Oxtongue River
  • Explore Ragged Falls by canoe
  • Stop for food on return
  • Arrive back in Toronto late evening

The experience

You leave Toronto at 7:30 or 9:00 am depending on the day, traveling by Sprinter van on weekdays or a motor coach on busy weekends (fall color season and public holidays). The drive to Algonquin Provincial Park takes you into a wilderness of 2,400 lakes and 1,200 km of rivers. Once there, a guide leads you on a scenic hike along park trails, moving at a pace that lets you take in the forest and the water views without rushing.

Around midday, you switch to paddling. A second guide joins you at Oxtongue Provincial Park to help manage the large canoe, and you paddle downstream toward Ragged Falls. The canoe and hike together run about three hours, from roughly 11 am to 2 pm. Bring snacks or a picnic to eat on the trail. The Algonquin Visitor Center has a cafeteria and microwave if you want to heat food, though the menu is limited and operates on a donation system. After the canoe trip, you visit the Visitor Center and climb to a short lookout with views over Muskoka before heading back to Toronto.

On the return journey, the van or coach makes a stop for a washroom and grocery break. The operator reads the group's mood and may offer karaoke, a quiz, games or quiet time on the ride home. You arrive back in Toronto between 8:30 and 10:00 pm. The whole day is led by an English-speaking guide, and the group stays small enough that regular breaks are built in.

What's the hike like in Algonquin Park?
