The experience

Six days splits the winter activities across enough time to chase the Northern Lights twice without rushing the other experiences. Day two stacks a 30-minute sightseeing flight above the snow-covered mountains and lakes, a city tour of Whitehorse's landmarks (the historic Paddlewheeler SS Klondike and a log cabin skyscraper), the Yukon Wildlife Preserve where you see elk, moose, caribou and mountain goats up close, and your first aurora viewing at the AuroraCentre. The next day adds ice fishing and snowshoeing on a frozen lake before another evening hunt for the Northern Lights.

The snowmobiling day comes with a safety briefing and your choice of pace: an exhilarating run up and down mountains or a relaxed forest trail through historic routes. Kicksledding follows on its own day: you learn the basics (pushing off the ground like a scooter) and travel slight elevations on forest trails and frozen lakes, where the sled's rails let you cross snow drifts and fresh powder. Both activities move through the same winter scenery but at different speeds and with different effort. The tour wraps with a transfer to the airport on day six.

Winter gear is required for all outdoor activities. Rental is available if you don't have your own. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Japanese and adjusts the itinerary as weather and conditions allow. You stay downtown in Whitehorse for all five nights, and airport transfers are included.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to experience multiple winter activities without piecing together separate bookings. The 6-day length gives each activity (snowmobiling, ice fishing, kicksledding) its own day and time to settle into the rhythm, rather than stacking them back-to-back. The two aurora viewing nights are scheduled on separate evenings, which increases your chances of clear skies. Moderate fitness is needed for snowmobiling and kicksledding. The sightseeing flight and wildlife preserve visit require less physical effort.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Japanese.

What's the Yukon Wildlife Preserve like in winter?

The preserve lets you see elk, moose, caribou, mountain goats and porcupines in their natural surroundings year-round. You get a front-row view and learn how these animals live through the Yukon winter.

How often do you get to see the Northern Lights on this tour?

You have two dedicated evenings for aurora viewing at the AuroraCentre, located far enough outside the city to escape light pollution. You can relax in sheltered comfort or sit beside a warm fire under the open sky.

Do I need my own winter clothes, or can I rent them?

Appropriate winter gear is required for all outdoor activities. If you don't have your own, rental is available through the operator.

What's the snowmobiling experience like?

After a safety briefing, you ride through the Yukon winter landscape at a pace you choose: either an exhilarating run over mountains or a relaxed tour through forest and historic trails. You'll pass snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes.

Is kicksledding difficult to learn?

Kicksledding is easy to master. The sled is propelled by kicking the ground with your foot like a scooter, and you travel slight elevations on forest trails and frozen lakes.

What happens if weather changes the plan?

The guide may adjust the itinerary based on weather conditions and their discretion. This flexibility is built into the tour because winter conditions in the Yukon can shift.
