Two nights with over 100 sled dogs, a Side by Side ride across the snow, and the northern lights overhead.

A 2-day activity in Whitehorse where you stay at a family-run lodge surrounded by over 100 sled dogs, ride in a Side by Side while the dogs exercise for winter, visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve on the second day, and watch for northern lights from the lodge grounds at night. The lodge sits outside city light pollution on the Takhini River, and all meals, warm gear and pickup from Whitehorse are included.

The experience

You arrive in Whitehorse and get picked up for the drive to the lodge, which sits far enough outside the city that the northern lights show directly overhead when they're active. The location is the whole point: no driving to a viewing site, no waiting in a queue. You step outside the lodge at night and look up. The lodge has four guest rooms with shared bathrooms, and the family runs it around their dogs: over 100 of them, all sled dogs in training for the winter season.

On one of your two days, you ride in a Side by Side (a golf cart-style vehicle) while the dogs do the actual work, pulling you across the snow as part of their exercise routine. You're not running or exerting yourself. You're watching them work. On the other day, you visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve to see the animals native to the region. Both days you're fed breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge. The operator supplies all the gear you need to stay warm outside, and coffee and tea are available throughout your stay.

The northern lights are not a guided tour. There's no schedule, no guarantee they'll appear, and no instructor narrating them. The lodge's position on the river and away from light pollution is what makes them visible when they do show. If conditions are right during your visit, you'll see them from the lodge grounds. The experience centers on being comfortable around dogs and spending time at the property itself rather than chasing lights across the territory.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What's the dog exercise like on the Side by Side?

You ride in the vehicle while a team of sled dogs pulls it across the snow as part of their training for the winter season. You're a passenger watching them work, not running alongside or handling the team yourself.

Will I see the northern lights during my stay?

The lodge's location outside city light pollution makes them visible overhead when they're active, but there's no guarantee they'll appear during your visit. You watch from the lodge grounds at night if conditions allow. It's not a guided tour with a set itinerary.

What's included in the 2 days?

All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner), the Side by Side dog ride, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve visit, warm gear for being outside, coffee and tea, and pickup from Whitehorse are included. Bathrooms are shared between guest rooms.

Do I need to be experienced around dogs to book this?

You should be very comfortable around dogs to enjoy the experience fully, since the lodge is built around over 100 sled dogs on site. Children are welcome from age 5.

How far is the lodge from Whitehorse?

The lodge is located outside the city far enough to escape light pollution for northern lights viewing. Pickup from Whitehorse is included, so you don't arrange your own transport.
