The Experience

“You see this one?” our guide Chenda asked, tapping the side of an old tank at the War Museum Cambodia. “My uncle remembers when these rolled through his village.” I could smell the metal and dust, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so quiet standing among all those relics — landmines lined up like strange souvenirs, faded photos tucked behind glass. We drank water under some banana trees and talked about how the rice fields change color through the year. There was something grounding about seeing daily life here instead of just ticking off temples.

I still think about that moment driving back into Siem Reap — dusty, full of snacks, feeling like I’d seen something real even if I couldn’t name every plant or explain every custom. Sometimes it’s enough just to sit quietly while the countryside rolls by your window.
