Three chapters of Cambodia's past and present in one morning and afternoon

A six to seven hour guided tour from Siem Reap visiting the War Museum, Wat Thmey Pagoda at the killing fields, and Chong Kneas floating village on Tonle Sap lake. You'll see military vehicles and weapons from the civil war, learn about the Khmer Rouge regime, and travel by boat through a village of hundreds of families living on stilts and floating houses. Transport, boat fees, entrance to the floating village, water and an English-speaking guide are included.

Step-by-step itinerary

Visit floating village and war sites

  • Drive to Chong Kneas floating village
  • Visit lotus farm and have snack
  • Explore village on stilts and water
  • Visit War Museum and learn history
  • Visit Wat Thmey Pagoda killing fields

The experience

Six to seven hours takes you through three distinct stops, each one anchored to a different layer of Cambodia's recent history. The War Museum displays military vehicles and weapons from the civil war. Your guide shares firsthand experience from that period. Wat Thmey Pagoda, built at the site of the killing fields, centers on the Khmer Rouge era under Pol Pot. The third stop is Chong Kneas, a floating village about thirty minutes from Siem Reap town on Tonle Sap lake.

Chong Kneas itself is the day's longest stretch. Hundreds of families (ethnic Khmer and Vietnamese) live there year-round, some on tall stilts on land and others in houses that float on the water. You'll see how they sustain themselves through fishing, farming, shops and tourism. The village also contains a school, restaurants, fish farms, a crocodile farm and flooded forest you can visit. Along the way to the village, you stop at a lotus farm where a local restaurant serves snacks. You'll sit in hammocks overlooking rice paddies and lotus fields.

You travel by air-conditioned car or minivan with pickup included. The boat fee and entrance to Chong Kneas are covered. Cold drinking water is provided throughout. Guests spend most of the day outdoors, so long clothes and sunscreen are recommended. The pace is set by the guide and the itinerary. You move through the three sites on a fixed schedule rather than choosing your own timing.
