The experience

The drive between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap takes most of a day, and this transfer turns the route itself into the itinerary. You start from your hotel in either city and travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a driver who speaks English. The first stop is Skoun Market, a local hub known for its insect vendors: a quick look at what people actually eat here, not a forced photo opportunity. From there the route heads north toward Kampong Thom, where you stop at Sambor Prei Kuk, a temple group that sits in the jungle and dates back to the 6th and 7th centuries. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch happens at a restaurant in Pre Bros before the afternoon leg.

The second half of the day brings you to two more stops. The Kampong Kdei Ancient Bridge, built in the 12th century during the same era as Angkor Wat, spans a river and holds the title of Cambodia's longest ancient bridge. Then comes Kampong Kleang, a fishing community on the shores of Tonle Sap Lake where houses sit on stilts or float on the water itself. You can add a boat ride through the villages for an extra fee, or walk the platforms and photograph the way people live there. By late afternoon you're dropped at your hotel in the destination city: Siem Reap if you started in Phnom Penh, or Phnom Penh if you started in Siem Reap.

The driver handles all the navigation and timing, and the vehicle includes bottled water for the road. Fuel, tolls and parking are covered. You choose at checkout whether to add the boat ride at Kampong Kleang and whether to pay for entry to Sambor Prei Kuk temple. The minimum age is 16, and the trip is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or cardiovascular concerns.
